Dear Dylan,
I figured I better write this blog about your eleventh month of life today, otherwise your mom would un-invite me from your birthday party this coming Sunday. I'd never miss your first birthday but it would be kind of interesting to see her juggle entertaining all the guests, making all the food and getting the icing out of your hair all by herself.
There is no doubt that your eleventh month was an eventful one. I almost need a series of blogs to cover it really.

On the health and wellness front you sure kept us busy. Your front two teeth came in. I guess that old Christmas wish is true for some after all. You also developed several more ear infections (5 and counting) which we considered enough to get you some serious help. We had some tubes installed and that seemed to do the trick. You certainly listen better now and you are talking more than ever.
You started walking on your own this month (which has come to a slow jog in some cases). It was obvious that my procrastination of baby proofing the house could no longer continue. I spent most of a Saturday installing locks on all the cabinets and putting up child gates on the stairs. These preemptive measures are merely challenges for you now as you're still determined to get into everything.

These challenges came with their own unique set of tantrums that we'd never seen before. At least not from you. I'd really consider them more mini-tantrums compared to some of your compadres. We have found ways to control them, usually by locking you in the pantry with all the food for a few hours. You never seem to mind and you always come out fat and happy with maple syrup and popcorn all over your face and ears.
We debated for a while about taking your pacifier away from you. We'd heard horror stories about other babies crying for weeks when the parents finally decided to take it away. We put it off for a while thinking that the holidays weren't really a good time for major life adjustments. Then one night without my knowledge your mom put you to bed without it. You went right to sleep and since that day you've never seemed to mind. Funny how we worried all that time about nothing. Thanks again for not telling your mom about the $25 I gave you for letting that one slide.

You have moved on from any type of pureed or processed food at this point. Nothing coming from a plastic container or on a spoon for that matter is worth eating to you. Personally I can't blame you. You have started trying all kinds of great foods now and eating them all by yourself. You've also adapted quite well to using a sippy cup and drinking from the bottle on your own. This will come in handy when you get to be my age.

You had a great time during your first Christmas and New Years. Everyone sure spoiled you rotten with some really cool gifts. You got some gift certificates too which we used to buy more books for bed time stories. You really enjoy reading time and you have almost worn out the dog book. You spent your first New Years with both sets of grandparents while your mom and I went out with friends and got some much needed "adult time". No offense you'll understand one day, when I am keeping your children while you go out.

One last thing to mention, your mom started teaching you some basic sign language. We knew that you had caught on when we were waiting at the surgery center to get your tubes installed and you started signing for milk. I guess when it comes to eating, those basic survival skills can really come in handy.
It's hard to imagine life without you.
Love,
Dad |
