My Aunt in Portland is on the fence about buying a Mac. For those of you that own Mac's you are saying to yourself "dude, this is a no brainer" but for her its a big decision. She's been suffering on Windows her entire life. But she knows no better really. We've all been there and thankfully someone, who loves us dearly and cares about us, saved us from the wretched hell of PC's.

The backstory here is that my Aunt Linda has sent me lots of emails and recently started leaving comments on my site regarding her Mac dilemma. It started as "to buy or not to buy" and now its come down to "when to buy". She left a few comments tonight on a a recent daily photo and its obvious that she just needs a gentle push from the Mac community before her pain and suffering is over with.

Here is my aunts recent comment:
After sitting in a meeting listening to the work woes of SMS and MIIS and the frustration of the complexity of MS that requires specialized administrators because the apps are so time-consuming to admin and the frustration of the desktop guys setting up new users on Vista...yep...I see Apple as the oasis in the desert of MS computers. I nearly bought one online a minute ago--I get a deal from Discover to do that. But...backed off one more time. Glossy display or matte? Printer with rebate or get my ancient HP laser to work? Decisions, decisions. Not "if" but definitely "when"!! Good thing all those Mac friends from yesteryears that I bashed about having a "real computer" are in my past and I'm only nibbling on crow--not eating it by the bucket!

Linda here are the answers to your questions from the comment. I am sure you never imagined I would turn this into a blog. But this is as important as our next president. Let's seal this deal, I can't wait for you to own a Mac!

1) Go with the Matte, it cuts down a lot on glare when you are in a well lit room or football stadium.

2) There are some nice 3rd-party PostScript printer drivers out there for Mac's but and the documentation is pretty thorough, however there is no guarantee that it will work with you printer. Give me your printer model and I will try to find out for you.

3) Awesome for Discover! Cheers to anyone for making it easier to buy a Mac, even if they bump the APR up 55% next year. You'll have it paid off by then anyway right?

4) Not "if" but definitely "when" -- Proof is in the pudding, you're ready. Don't waste time. Go ahead and pull the trigger (aka improve life now). Stop drowning in misery and computing hell, buy one dammit! :) Then come back and tell us all the wonderful things that you like about it.

Linda, you are on the west coast which means its only 6:45pm. Depending on how often you check my site there is a chance that you might actually get this before the Apple Store closes. And I know its only a mile from your house so you could make it down there tonight to buy one. Don't let US down! Report back soon with good news.

Well Linda I didn't think that I was going to be Pro-Mac, but I feel a conversion in the making. See, our school just started a laptop initiative this year, which is backed by Apple. This means that in the within the next two years every student from the 5th grade up will be issued a Macbook to take home. Grades 4 and below will have laptops to use at the school. With this happening all the teachers have been issued their laptops already. I received mine before Christmas and Kitch just got hers last week. When I first heard that our system was doing this, I was very skeptical about it. I worked with a few Mac’s in college and really really really disliked them. After getting my Macbook and playing with it over Christmas, I have come to the following conclusion. IT ROCKS!!! My favorite part of it is the OS X or Leopard. It is so smooth and forgiving. The only downfall I have with it right now is not having the MS Office suite. I think if it had that it I might never go back. I am working on our Technology department to get this soon. Leopard I feel is so much better for Vista. All in all, I say go for it and order me a Time capsule while you are at it. I will be looking for it in the mail next week. Grant

I'm humbled that I've achieved a blog from my favorite (sorry, Grant/Tyler--it's his website...we need to cater to keep in the limelight) nephew. Not only have I "seen the light" (as in backlit keyboards, better displays, "rockin" (as my other favorite nephew Grant attested to) OS like Leopard (I have to love any company that names it's OS after a big cat!) and more intuitive working environment, but I'm more than ready. I have been reading blogs and other Mac info and feel my "ancient" (probably 7 years?) HP laser is doable (model is 5P for the one asking) but should I take advantage of the rebate when purchasing to get a Canon photo printer for all the new fun I will have with my "also ancient" digital camera (I think it is 6 maybe)? Thanks for the advice on the display--that saves a few bucks--though I probably won't use it at any game (might use it on a bench in downtown PDX, though). Grant, my understanding is that each Office package comes with 3 codes that can be used. I will have two extras when I purchase the Home/Student Edition if you do not mind it being that edition. You and Kitch are welcome to code #2 and #3. I haven't been excited about anything computer in a few years. I'm SO revved but Grant and Denny don't get all of their buying savvy from the Deaton side of the family. If I had bought before Discover added Apple and I get 5% cash back--I would be 5% less cash when I purchased! :) Any more good advice from the wise and cool folks?? What about the extended care package? One-on-one training for a year for $99? :)

Linda - I am SO proud of you. After all those years of snubbing my mac. I knew you would come around some day. This is really monumental. Grant, you deserve accolades. Linda was my neighbor for years - my very dearest friend -- but would she listen to me. Nah. It took a favorite nephew to persuade her. Good for you!!!!

Denny - apologies --- I understand from my dear friend Linda that YOU were the persuader and that Grant just put the icing on the cake. No matter --- the two of you deserve high praise. We finally won her over!!!!!!!
